Women Aren’t Funny? An illustration series exploring some of my favourite women of stand-up comedy
What is Women Aren't Funny?
‘Women Aren’t Funny?’ is my new illustration series showcasing my favourite ladies of stand-up comedy. For the series, I’m digitally painting portraits of 10 of my favourite comediennes using my iPad Pro and the Procreate app.
Why am I doing this series?
The stereotype of women not being funny has always bothered me, not just because bigotry is douchey and lazy, but a lot of people struggle to think of many women who perform stand-up. My aim for this project is to spread the names of some of my fave badass comediennes and start a dialogue about women in comedy. I love comedy and I love illustrating badass women that inspire me, plus I’m a contrarian feminist that likes to prove people wrong so naturally this project was born.
Who am I?
I’m Annarose Smith - a mixed media illustrator based in Cardiff, UK. I mostly illustrate portraits and figures, but also enjoy painting wildlife, lettering, and patterns. I work in a combination of digital and traditional media including gouache, watercolour, ink, and pencil. I’m quite obsessed with comedy and find myself really fascinated by the craft involved in stand-up.
How can I follow along?
You can sign up for my newsletter to keep updated with the project, or you can follow me on Instagram or Twitter or follow #womenarentfunny. If you’d like to share my posts with anyone that’d also be dandy, but no pressure! Please let me know what you think about the subject in the comments or on social media, recommendations for comedians are very welcome!
Stay tuned for some badass babes of comedy and I hope to see you around!
